About us

The Organelle Genome Database for Algae is developed and maintained by the Laboratory of Genetics and Breeding of Marine Organism (MOGBL) at Ocean University of China (OUC),which was founded in 1953 by Professor Fang Zongxi, a famous geneticist in China. It is the first laboratory to carry out research on Marine biological breeding in China, and the birthplace of conservation, genetics and breeding studies on Saccharina japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Pyropia yezoensis and other seaweeds resources. The MOGBL is the largest and most abundant germplasm library of macroalgae in China has collected and preserved more than 70,000 germplasm resources of over 200 species in the world. Now, the MOGBL is the National Marine algae International Science and Technology Cooperation Base(in China)and the Brand International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Shandong Provincial. The research direction of the MOGBL is macroalgae resources, genetics, breeding, and the main research directions include macroalgae cell and molecular genetics, gene and comparative genomics, germplasm creation and genetic improvement. Since the new century, the Laboratory has carried out a series of work in the macroalgae such as molecular markers and the genome research, and participated successively in the complete international "One KP" plan, completed more than 30 kinds of seaweeds mitochondria DNA and plastid DNA genome sequencing work, and completed the alginate and fucoidin, mannitol and other important carbohydrate metabolic pathways of prediction and verification work. In the future, we would like to establish broader cooperation with all the research communities through the Organelle Genome Database for Algae.
